Neurorehabilitation is the science and art of enabling persons with physical, mental and sensory impairments acquired due to neurological disorders. It works on the principle of neuroplasticity which is the brain's ability to reorganize itself by forming new connections compensating for injury or disease and adjusting to new activities in response to new situations. This program will assist the patient to attain highest possible degree of self-sufficiency and participation in the community. It is a cooperative effort of the medical and rehabilitation professionals along with the commitment of patients and their families to achieve the best possible outcome. Patients who undergo this program may also learn adaptive strategies to compensate for abilities that cannot be completely restored. Physiotherapists can also help with the prevention of secondary complications, motor re-education, bed mobility and transfers training, balance and gait retraining. Different techniques used in this program include Brunnstorms Protocol, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation.
